La bise and French greeting etiquette

Sometimes, it takes a step back to realise how strange or complicated some things really are. In my case, I’ve taken so many steps back from the French motherland I’ve ended up on the other side of the English Channel!

From putting vinegar on your chips to somehow finding that medieval two-taps-instead-of-one system perfectly normal, the Brits can be a pretty puzzling people. But we have our moments too. And those moments are called ‘la bise’, the French greeting etiquette of kissing acquaintances as well as randomers on just about any social occasion.

Depending on which region of France you live in, there are different customs as to how many kisses you should give, and even which side of the side one should start on.
