There’s actually going to be a legends World Cup!

It’s been discussed for a while, it’s now looking very likely: the first ever retired legends football World Cup is set to place in Mexico in 2017, according to ESPN.

While the details are not fully known yet, it’s believed 12 teams will take part featuring some of the game’s greatest ever names. It’s expected teams will compete on a smaller pitch, most likely playing 5 or 7-a-side. The games will be 30 minutes a half – ’cause you know, they aren’t getting any younger.

It’ll be a great opportunity for many fans to see their heroes return to action. The revenue generated  by the event will be distributed to a range of charities, which is great. The full details will be unveiled in January 2016. Just for fun, here’s who I’d like to see involved:

Zidane, Henry, Pires, Vieira, Thuram, Blanc & Barthez

Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Gilberto Silva, Kaka & Ronaldinho. And yes, I’m definitely counting those last 2 as retired.

Shearer, Beckham, Owen, Lineker, Wright, Keown

Maldini, Del Piero, Nesta, Gattuso

Ballack, Kahn, Klose

Raul, Morientes, Puyol, Xavi, Guardiola – be great to see these two play in the same team

Maradona (for lols), Zanetti, Sorin, Batistuta

Davids, Seedorf, Bergkamp, Overmars, Van Nistelrooy (even though he’s a dick)

Figo, Pauleta, Deco, Rui Costa

Who would you like to see in a legends tournament?
